A STRING of blunders by officials has seen tags for released criminals put on the wrong people.
They have been incorrectly mounted in 11 cases in the last five years.
In February, contractor Capita – paid £50m a year for the electronic monitoring system – tagged the wrong person.
The error went unnoticed for three weeks.
In November, it took a week for an error to be discovered.
Accomplices sometimes feign an identity to fool the company fit the label.
In 2020, Capita security officer Martin Crean, 49, was jailed for seven years for taking bribes.
David Spencer, of the Center for Crime Prevention, said: “These mistakes endanger the public for no good reason.”
The Ministry of Justice said: “Thanks to security measures, only a small number of mistakes were made.”
