England in 10 attempts to demolish Samoa in Rugby League World Cup opening match

Samoa, which featured a string of high-profile NRL stars but looked undercooked as they hadn’t played a warm-up match, hit back on the stroke of half time when Izack Tago intercepted a loose pass on the halfway line and ran away, but they ended the half with a 18-6 backlog.

Kallum Watkins helped England revolt in the second half, while Samoa showed their frustration in the 62nd minute when scrum half Anthony Milford was dismissed sin for a late tackle on Tomkins.

Herbie Farnworth, Whitehead – twice – Tommy Makinson, Williams and Tom Burgess all went on to take a resounding win.

Makinson claimed a total of 24 points including 10 conversions to complete a painful afternoon for Samoa.

Coach Matt Parish denied that his men threw in the towel, but he continued to count the injury costs for Tyrone May, Braden Hamlin-Uele and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, which will leave them missing the rest of the tournament.

Significantly, England came through unscathed and Wane will be making big changes for next Saturday’s game against France in Bolton.

After this resounding success, Wane’s side will go there with confidence running through their veins.
