Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was in tears after Marseille missed out on a place in the competition Europa League final on Thursday evening.

Marseille's semi-final in the Europa League was in good order after the 1-1 draw against Atalanta in the first leg last week, but the Serie A club fell behind 3-0 in the return on Thursday evening.

Atalanta, who knocked out Liverpool in the quarter-finalwill now play in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen on May 22.

Leverkusen recorded a 4-2 win against Roma on aggregate but two late goals from Xabi Alonso's side secured a draw on Thursday evening, extending their incredible unbeaten run to 49 games.

Leverkusen now has the longest unbeaten run in the history of European football, surpassing Benfica's record of 48 games unbeaten in all competitions between December 1963 and February 1965.

Aubameyang, meanwhile, is having an impressive season for Marseille, scoring 27 goals in all competitions for the French club.

However, the former Arsenal captain was moved to tears after the final whistle on Thursday evening after Marseille missed the Europa League final following their defeat to Atalanta.

However, Aubameyang's Europa League campaign will not end without a personal trophy as he is likely to finish as the tournament's top scorer this season with ten goals in the competition.

Marseille head coach Jean-Louis Gasset said after his side's defeat to Atalanta: 'It is incomprehensible to go from a week in which we competed with them in aggression and desire, to be eaten by aggression tonight.

'We made two or three mistakes this game, while they were very aggressive when they didn't have the ball. In terms of aggression we were at the bottom.

'We tried. We used attackers to get back to 2-1, but we didn't get there.

'We must not forget what we have done. We are disappointed because we dreamed, but we must not forget what we did.

“It is important that Marseille plays in the European Cup next season, and I ask for sacred unity from everyone.”
