Farmer arrested for 'shooting dead a burglar who broke into his home' is released on police bail – as fundraising to pay his legal costs reaches £41,000

A farmer who was arrested and charged with shooting a suspected burglar has been released on police bail as fundraising to pay his legal costs exceeds £40,000.

Rob Lomas, 50, was arrested on suspicion of murder after Marcus Smith, 19, was found dead at his farm in Derbyshire on Wednesday morning.

The police received a report of a burglary in a building on the farm around 1.20 am.

Mr Lomas was also arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a second teenager, who was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary, was found with gunshot wounds on the road near the farm.

The farmer has now been released on bail, reported the sun.

Derbyshire Police said yesterday that investigations are continuing and three men arrested in connection with the burglary have also been released on bail.

It comes as the fundraising page, set up by Mr Lomas' son Joshua, has reached £41,000.

Joshua wrote: 'We are raising much needed money to support our family and my father, Rob, through this very difficult time.

“Rob has the most steadfast loyalty you could ever ask for in a father and friend and has always been there for me and all his many friends.

'Like any farmer, he works relentlessly in all weather conditions, but always makes time for a drink and a friendly, humorous chat.

'Rob, Kate (his partner) and I now need help in the coming weeks. That's why we need your kind and extremely valuable help.

'Please donate whatever you can, every pound is hugely appreciated.'

Meanwhile, tributes have been paid to Marcus on social media.

He is described as the 'sweetest boy' and 'sweet and polite', and someone who 'lit up every room he entered'.
