FUMING drivers have voiced their frustrations after a major car park was closed due to “safety fears”.
Locals were left stunned after Moorfield car park in Truro, Cornwallwas closed indefinitely by Cornwall Council.
The largest council in the city parking spot was closed after “concerns” were discovered during an inspection.
The multi-storey areas, including decks four to nine, of the Moorfield car park are now closed to visitors.
However, Cornwall Council has said the ground floor and outdoor areas, as well as parking for reserved permit holders, will remain open.
But last night's shock closure of the car park, which has a total of more than 680 spaces, has only compounded the problems locals are struggling with with parking.
The closure follows the loss of the Viaduct and Carrick House car parks, which were demolished to make way for the huge Pydar development.
It means there are now only three council-run long-stay car parks in the city centre.
The council's full statement reads: “The multi-storey section of Moorfield Car Park in Truro will close from this evening (Tuesday, May 21) following concerns raised during a routine inspection of the building.
“The ground floor and outdoor areas, as well as the parking lot for reserved permit holders, remain open.”
Stunned drivers were quick to comment on Cornwall Council's closure announcement Facebook.
The message generated more than a hundred responses from dissatisfied motorists.
One said: “The final nail in the coffin for Truro and his retail businesses, Viaduct gone and now Moorfield, almost impossible to find parking in Truro Cornwall Council anymore.
Another wrote: “Wow. How long will it take for this to be resolved? Truro is an already dying city centre, we need to do everything we can to bring people into the city.
'To save ours jobs and bring money in our local economy.”
A third commented: “In other words… The council is pretending it's unsafe to use it so they can demolish it, sell the land and replace it with apartments.”
While another Facebook user said: “Our council has completely destroyed Truro and the surrounding areas.
'Because of the development there are more houses, more people, more cars. So the best thing you can do is close or dig up the city's parking garages. Idiots!
“Fewer and fewer parking spaces will spell death for our already struggling city centre, it won't take a genius to make that happen.”
