Marseille drew 1-1 at home to Atalanta last week, so knew they had a difficult task moving forward.

Atalanta dumped Liverpool out of the competition in the previous round, so confidence was high, and when former Everton and Leicester great Ademola Lookman fired in the opener they never looked in danger.

Goals from Matteo Ruggeri and El Bilal Toure saw Atalanta run out easy winners and leave Marseille's dreams of European glory in tatters.

It was a difficult result for some to accept Aubameyang left in tears at the final whistle.

The forward struggled to control himself as he tried to hold back tears as fans shared their condolences.

One responded, saying: “I feel sorry for him. He served us best in one of our club's darkest times. Head up champion, you are a legend.”

Another said: “Great player, I'm so sorry man.”

A third wrote: “I feel so sad for him. He has been great for them this season.”

And another commented: “Aubameyang deserves better.”

Aubameyang has had a great season in Europe this season with twelve goals in fifteen games.

But he still hasn't won anything on the continent after finishing second in the Europa League in 2019, when Arsenal was defeated 4-1 in the final by Chelsea.
