Germany furious as they are dumped out of the World Cup by controversial Japanese goal against Spain as the ball appears to be out of play

JAPAN advanced to the World Cup knockouts after getting a controversial winner over Spain – which ultimately scared the hell out of Germany.

Having taken the lead through Alvaro Morata, La Roja looked set to cruise into the last 16 alongside the Germans as they led Costa Rica in the other Group E match.

Kaoru Mitoma’s cross to Japan’s winner appeared to be out of play before VAR intervened

However, Japan staged a stunning comeback after the break as Ritsu Doan’s powerful attack put them level.

Then Ao Tanaka turned the deficit and group upside down to give his side a remarkable lead.

The cross leading to his goal appeared to have passed the byline, which would have resulted in a disallowed and a goal kick.

The on-pitch referees initially ruled it out of play before Tanaka scored, but VAR corrected the decision.

The technology proved that the ball was kept in play for only a few millimeters before Doan pulled it back from his teammate to give him a nap.

Photos seem to show the ball was over – and few players questioned the referee after he initially disallowed the ball.

Before the VAR check, ITV commentator Ally McCoist said: “I think the ball went out, I thought the ball went out.

“It’s another great ball, put it behind the back ball, great cross…”

Watching it in slow motion, the Scottish legend added: “Yes, yes [over the line]. Doan, what an impression he made, dear me.

“They’re checking it out. That first corner seems to go just over the line, but they are taking their time and they should be… He gave the goal. Incredible.

“That is absolutely amazing, I thought in every way, I thought it was over, obviously not that they looked into it through the VAR.

“Again, I’m not sure if Simon is covering himself in glory, but what a turnaround.”

Japan held on to a 2–1 victory to claim first place in the group, meaning Germany, who beat Costa Rica 4–2, were knocked out while Spain clung to second place via goal difference.
