Heat wave: Four runners die during Richmond Park event as temperatures rise

f

our people collapsed and were taken to hospital while competing in a half marathon in south west London, police said.

Due to the high temperatures reaching 32°C in the afternoon, police officers were forced to de London Ambulance Service at the Richmond Park event.

“Please be careful folks, and stay hydrated,” the Royal Parks police insisted.

The sold-out half marathon event kicked off at 9:30 a.m. from the Sheen Gate and attracted 350 people, according to the Run Through website.

The heat wave causes London Ambulance Service to be inundated with thousands of calls, some of which are abusive.

The service currently receives about 7,000 to 8,000 calls per day, but call handlers can take about 80 to 100 calls per day.

Although temperatures have reached 30 degrees for most of this week in the capital, the forecast drops to 28 degrees on Monday, with possible rain on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Health authorities are urging people to stay hydrated and alert for heat exhaustion, while the London Fire Brigade is warning people about how quickly grass fires can spread in today’s “tinder-dry” conditions.
