Heavy rain is expected to continue to drench parts of the UK after a wet and windy night triggered weather warnings in parts of the country.

Showers, thunderstorms and strong winds will move over the west from Tuesday morning.

The With Office said that despite the weather remaining “restless”, Monday evening’s harsh conditions – when gusts of 60-70 mph were seen in Cornwall, Devon and west Wales – would decrease.

There were yellow weather warnings for parts of Northern IrelandWales and South West England from 6pm to midnight, with the National Weather Service urging travelers to remain vigilant amid expected road and transport disruptions.

Meteorologist Simon Partridge said on Tuesday continued rain and wind, but “the worst will be over”.

“It will still be windy, but it should be a bit more business-as-usual windy,” he said.

“Most of the strongest winds (on Monday) have come in after dark when most people are home, and the weather warnings expire tonight.

“In the course of the week there will be more rain, so we will keep an eye on that.

“Tomorrow will be a pretty windy day – not as windy as tonight, but windy across the country with a mix of showers and sunshine, showers in the west and possibly a little thunderstorm and drier and clearer in the east, but still a heady, troubled kind of day.”

The Environment Agency issued five flood warnings Monday for Alfriston, Barcombe Mills and Hellingly and Horsebridge, in East Sussex, and for Mock Bridge, near Shermanbury, West Sussex, on the River Adur.

It warned that Whitwell, Wroxall, Langbridge and Alverstone on the Eastern Yar River on the Isle of Wight were at risk of flooding.

A second yellow rain warning was issued from 3pm to midnight on Monday for the south west of Scotland, Lothian Borders and Strathclyde.

Showers and winds are expected to continue on Wednesday, but will decrease later in the week and make way for cooler and drier conditions.
