Homeowner 'shocked' to see property being promoted by government

A Christchurch homeowner was shocked to see her home featured in an Instagram post from Housing Minister Chris Bishop, Housing Minister Tama Potaka and other national MPs about building more social housing.

It was part of a government announcement on Wednesday that there would be $140 million in new funding for 1,500 new social homes from July next year.

The post included six private homes in central Christchurch.

One of the owners, Beth, said she was in shock when she saw her house all over social media.

“I was really shocked, on the one hand I thought, 'Oh, is this what they're touting about what social housing will look like?'

“But on the other hand, I thought, 'No way, they're making images everywhere, so it doesn't really mean anything,'” she said.

Beth said a blunder like this from the National Party was unacceptable.

“If you're going to build 1,500 social housing units, I think maybe you should have a better idea of what exactly you're going to build, rather than just pulling a picture from somewhere.

“Who knows how they got the image of our homes and posted it as something that is patently untrue.”

In a statement, a National Party spokesperson said:

“In a social media post to promote the Government's commitment in the upcoming Budget to build more social housing, National used stock images of homes. After contact from a member of the public linked to the property, the post was to replace.”

All social media posts have now been deleted.

Beth said that despite the blunder, she didn't want an apology.
