Customers have taken to social media to express their anger after the app went down this morning.

According to DownDetector, more than 2,800 users have reported problems with the app. According to the site, approximately 57 percent of reported issues relate to mobile banking.

One customer explained the error they received, saying: 'Can't log into the app and on the computer I get this message: 503 ERROR The request could not be fulfilled.

'The Lambda function included with the CloudFront distribution is limited. We're currently unable to connect to the server for this app or website.'

A fourth said: I need my banking for a payment as soon as possible, what's going on?' while another complained: 'I haven't been able to access the app since 9am. “It was resolved quickly – not an ideal start to the BH weekend.”

HSBC said on X/Twitter: 'Some customers are currently experiencing difficulties accessing online and mobile banking.

'We are truly sorry and we are urgently investigating. We will share an update as soon as possible.'

In a later statement at 11.30am, a spokesperson said: 'Our online and mobile banking services are recovering. Customers must be able to use the services normally.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused this morning.”

HSBC previously apologized after more than 10,000 customers lost access to their online accounts on November 24 last year.

The outage, which started just after 7am, prevented many customers from taking part in the Black Friday sale.

Sam Richardson of consumer group Which? said at the time: 'This fell on Black Friday, when many people were looking to make significant savings on expensive items.'

HSBC said the outage was caused by an internal system problem. It did not affect customers of First Direct or M&S Bank, divisions of the company.

Meanwhile, Down Detector receives network status updates from various sources, including social media and reports submitted to its website.

HSBC has around 14.8 million customers in the UK, although it remains unclear how many customers use its mobile banking app.
