A prisoner Waikeria Prisonsouth of Hamilton, was taken from his cell after a fire broke out on Friday.
Deputy prison warden David Alty said staff were alerted to the fire which had started in a prisoner’s cell at around 6pm Friday.
The prisoner has been safely removed from the scene and has been examined by the medical team, he said.
“There was no risk to the wider security of the prison.”

The fire was extinguished and there was no structural damage to the cell. However, the prisoner was transferred to another cell, a Corrections spokesman said.
Staff were investigating the cause of the fire, which has not yet been determined.
