James Maddison hits back at ‘insulting’ suggestions he wouldn’t suit England squad

The Leicester playmaker continued his brilliant start to the season against Nottingham Forest on Monday, scoring twice and providing an assist in a resounding 4-0 win.

Maddison has now scored five Premier League goals despite a difficult opening week for Brendan Rodgers’ side, sparking fresh calls to see him included in Gareth Southgate‘s squad.

But given that Southgate has not turned to the 25-year-old since his lone cap in 2019, it seems unlikely that Maddison will be recalled with so few before 2022. World Cup in Qatar.

Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Mason Mount and Bukayo Saka all offer competition in attacking midfielders, all of whom have played extensively under Southgate.

When asked for suggestions, his attitude has played a part in his being constantly overlooked, Maddison told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football: “I’ve never seen anything like it.

“But that almost questions my personality and my professionalism, which is obviously quite insulting.”
