Following the criticism, Lizzo took to Instagram and shared a series of photos and videos of her wearing the dress on the green carpet, with the caption: “If I'm not dressed in your best you're fatphobic.”

On Monday night, the Truth Hurts hitmaker made sure all eyes were on her as she arrived at the Met's famous steps.

And although Lizzo exuded confidence in the floral creation, which accentuated her curves, not everyone was so convinced.

The singer was decked out in a sleeveless light brown dress with shiny fabric that perfectly matched her skin tone.

Lizzo, whose real name is Melissa Jefferson, wore a bowl-shaped headpiece that reached several inches above her head, which was mocked on social media.

The designer called the outfit a “vase dress,” which could refer to the shape of the headpiece or the dress's upturned skirt that rose several inches above the red carpet.

The outfit hugged Lizzo's curves and featured a sizzling sheer panel across her chest to accentuate her cleavage.

While the semi-sheer look matched her skin, it was also enlivened with small leaf designs, making the star look like a scene from a beautiful autumn day, complete with falling red, orange and yellow leaves.

The singer claimed that if fans didn't like her appearance they were being 'fatphobic', but that didn't stop them from criticizing her.

The dress was also described as a 'full body corset', and the skirt, which gave a hint of Lizzo's legs, had more sparse designs.

Conceptual sketches of the dress and a photo of Weinsanto's original version indicate that the outfit initially did not have a facial cutout, but Lizzo made sure to show off her stunning beauty while wearing the dress.

Fans and critics of the artist seemed to enjoy poking fun at the unusual outfit on social media.

“When Lizzo comes all the way out of this cocoon, she will be a beautiful butterfly,” joked one user on X, formerly Twitter.

Another person commented that her outfit had “meme potential,” and that they couldn't “wait to see the results.”

The Barstool Sports account joked, “Guys see this and all they can think about is crumpling up a piece of paper and shooting it at Lizzo's dome.”

Someone else joked: “Don't bring snacks to the #MetGala while Lizzo tries to look like the brown bag the snack came in.”

One person wasn't afraid to be blunt about the dress.

“Lizzo really let someone convince her that this looked good and appropriate and that she looks horrible. “It's not a flattering fit, the color washes her out, she looks uncomfortable, and even her normally beautiful face is overtaken by the look,” they said. 'This is very unfortunate.'

One critic added: 'It reminds me a bit of a used coffee filter.'

“Lizzo gives coffee filters,” another agreed.

The Costume Institute's Spring Exhibition falls on the first Monday in May each year and is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This year the exhibition is called Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, while the dress code is The Garden of Time.

Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth served as this year's co-chairs. Vogue's Anna Wintour was also on the committee.

The chairs of honor for the evening were Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew.

“This year's co-chairs reflect a variety of career achievements and each has their own style history at the Met Gala,” Vogue said.

The display case contained approximately 250 items from the Costume Institute's permanent collection, with many of the pieces too fragile to ever be worn again, or even placed upright on a mannequin.

Last night Kim Kardashian showed off her tiny waist while Kylie Jenner, Zendaya and Jennifer Lopez all showed off their sensational figures in stunning dresses.
