Lord of the Rings fans reveal why they fear a new movie sequel

It seems fans have done just that finally had enough with nostalgic sequels to beloved films while roasting Warner Bros for new Lord of the Rings movie.

For some reason, 'little freak' Gollum gets his own movie – a controversial choice considering how bad the game based on the character done last year.

Even the Hobbit series was much less loved than the original, despite a great cast and Ian McKellen return as Gandalf.

Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is produced by Peter Jackson original actor Andy Serkis returning to the titular role.

The announcement comes after Warner Bros revealed last year that they had struck a deal to make multiple films based on JRR Tolkien's fantasy world.

During a meeting about the company's prospects, CEO David Zaslav reportedly revealed that they were “now in the early stages of script development” for a new slate of films.

The films will “explore storylines that have yet to be told,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Despite the esteemed actor and director being attached to the film, fans at the studio are clamoring for the project to be scrapped – especially since a fan-made film of the same name has been removed from YouTube.

“I beg Hollywood to stop,” Annie Delavoye wrote on X while Chris Tilley joked: “Only interested if [Serkis] directs in character.'

“I know we love Gollum, but why would I want to watch that thing any longer than his short scenes in the original films,” Paul added.

User bigbeandotgov shared: 'Why is Lord of the Rings suddenly obsessed with Gollum.

“He had a point in the story where he existed? You can't have 'the iconic Gollum character returns', it's just going to be a little freak that just flops around for two hours.”

The hate the unmade film is receiving isn't blind rage, however, with many people complaining about a broader trend within cinema at the moment.

“At some point I feel like we have to address the fact that so much of mass culture is now just the trash of yesteryear, endlessly recycled by a handful of monopolies that basically own everything,” said Luke Savage.

Danny added: “The cinematic craftsmanship of Jackson's LotR trilogy was of a caliber that cinema will likely never see again. The stars aligned.

“I'm so tired of seeing IPs being exhausted and dug up, chasing unattainable profits, while new stories and ideas are already dead.”

For Lord of the Rings fans, this feels almost insulting, given Tolkien's dedicated world-building with a vast library of lore to delve into.

'Tolkien spent his life creating an intricately detailed world with entire genealogies and language families just so Hollywood could look and go'gollum cinematic universe”', says Theo Bromic.

User Magicantean added: 'By the way, this is why Christopher Tolkien had the final say on his father's work. Literally the exact reason. It is not lost on me that the rights were sold before his body was cold.”

JRR Tolkien's son died in 2020 at the age of 95 and was the custodian of his father's story rights to Middle Earth and editor of all posthumously published works.

In a shared statement, studio heads Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy said: “For more than two decades, moviegoers have embraced the Lord of the Rings film trilogy for the undeniable dedication that Peter, Fran and Philippa have shown in protecting the legacy of Tolkien's works, and ensuring that audiences could experience the incredible world he created in a way that honors his literary vision.

“We are honored that they want to be our partners on these two new films. With Andy coming on board to direct Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollumwe continue our important commitment to excellence, which is a true hallmark of how we all want to move forward and contribute further to the Lord of the Rings film history.'
