A man has appeared in court charged with attempted murder after an officer was 'chased down the road with a chainsaw' following a police car crash that left two injured.

Liridon Kastrati, 30, is also charged with a number of driving offenses following a car crash on Glasgow Road in Paisley, Renfrewshire, yesterday afternoon.

Dramatic footage posted on social media showed one of the officers being chased down the street by a man with a chainsaw.

Glasgow Road was closed between Buchlyvie Road and Allanton Avenue for a number of hours, but has now reopened.

Kastrati has not entered a plea and has been committed for further investigation.

He has been remanded in custody and will appear again at Paisley Sheriff Court in eight days.

Footage from the scene showed a man wearing a gray top and black pants shouting as he allegedly sprinted toward an officer while wielding a large weapon.

About a dozen officers swarmed the road with footage from the scene showing a police patrol car crashing into the wall of a nearby house after an alleged collision between motorcycles during the chase.

A dark-colored Volkswagen is also seen with the front severely damaged.

The impact required the two injured officers to be treated by paramedics.

Police have since assured concerned residents that there is no greater risk to the public and that no other injuries have been reported.

Other footage shows police officers arriving on the scene restraining a person on the sidewalk with the help of passerby heroes.

A number of officers were seen bundling a person on the ground before more officers came to their aid.

Plainclothes officers emerge to help their colleagues on site outside a dental practice.

Glasgow Road was closed between Buchlyvie Road and Allanton Avenue but has since reopened.

A Police Scotland spokesperson previously said: 'A 30-year-old man has been arrested and charged following a disturbance involving a weapon and a collision on Glasgow Road in Paisley.

'Two officers were injured and treated by paramedics.

'The 30-year-old man is due to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court on Tuesday, May 7.'

“It's a busy road but it's the first time I've seen anything like this,” one resident told the Scottish Sun.

“Fortunately, no one appears to have been seriously injured, which is the most important thing.”

A statement from Police Scotland yesterday said: 'On Monday 6 May 2024 at around 1pm, a disturbance involving a weapon occurred following a collision between a car and a stationary police vehicle at Glasgow Road in Paisley.

“There is no greater risk to the public and officers remain at the scene while investigations are ongoing.

'Glasgow Road is closed between Buchlyvie Road and Allanton Avenue. Drivers are asked to avoid the area and use an alternate route.”
