Palace continued to tear a woeful United apart as goals from Michael Olise, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Tyrick Mitchell did the damage.

Live on Sky Sports after the final whistle, Carragher did not hold back criticism of Ten Hag's side.

He said: “This is one of the worst coached teams in the Premier League, that's a fact. That's not an opinion. That's a fact.

“The numbers tell you that when you see them at the bottom of the league defensively, lower than Sheffield United.

“I struggled to see how United would win tonight, but I thought Palace would win one or two clean sheets. No Manchester United team should be beaten 4-0 by Crystal Palace.

“If Manchester United's Under-23 team were playing at Manchester United, had gone through the academy, been coached and learned how to play, I still wouldn't expect them to lose 4-0.

“I've never been a manager or a coach, but I've been a player and I've been coached by top coaches and some of the things I see are just wrong.”

Carragher singled out Casemiro for criticism because the midfielder is a nightmare as an improvised defender due to an injury crisis.

The expert said the ex-Real Madrid star should “call it a day” about his career and move away from the elite level of the game to the MLS or Saudi Arabia.

Carragher said: “I'm dead serious. He is getting older, the people around him have to tell him that this has to stop.

“He was an absolute great. But I always remember something when I retired. There was a saying that I always remember as a footballer: 'Leave football before football leaves you'.

Carragher also shot Antony, Mason Mountain and Andre Onana as the trio gestured and covered their mouths as they spoke as they trudged off the field.

The former Liverpool defender shouted: 'Just get off the pitch. I mean, talking and whispering behind your hand.

“It was absolutely terrible. You're probably talking about one of the players or someone else, or the line-up or the manager.

“Just get off the field. Shut your mouth and get in. You were beaten 4-0. Whispering and talking about other players, honestly, embarrassing.”

The pressure on Ten Hag is now increasing as the team languishes in eighth place with 54 points, with three league games to go before the FA Cup final against Manchester city.

United have never finished below seventh and their lowest points total came in the 2021/22 season, when they finished on a disappointing 58 points.

“I don't see it very clearly, but they need changes from the players, but they also need changes from him.”

Alan Shearer – Sacked
