Megan The Stallion review: Rapper is buzzing at Brixton Academy

Megan Thee Stallion stormed, or rather, twerked into the city – and boy, what a ride it was to remember.

Normally, the rapper wastes no time ramping up the heat with her Richter Scale-recorded trunk shakes and whip-cracking puns. But during Wednesday’s performance, she focused on cooling the crowd.

As the temperatures at the O2 Brixton Academy plummeted to sizzling, dust-melting-with-skin levels, Megan regularly paused her show to make sure her Hotties were (quite literally) okay.

“I know it’s hotter than an asshole. Are you feeling well? I’ll be watching you,” she promised, before throwing bottles of water at dehydrated gamblers. Staff were also spotted cleaning the front row, and at one point a girl – wearing a halter top, WTF! – had to be brought to safety over the safety fence.

Health issues aside, Megan was cooking on gas from the moment she stepped onto the stage in a black bodysuit.

Bouncing between deep cuts, solid favorites and claw-sharp tracks from her biting new album Traumazine, most notably the growling NDA and bow-down biatches Her, the Texan’s star power was in full light mode, whether she was playfully grabbing her crotch or unleashed her signature growl, or leading the crowd in a surprisingly uplifting chant of “Real hot girl s***.”

Megan took audience participation to another level (Picture: Rex Features)

After rap-a-long renditions of Savage and the delightfully filthy (unless you’re a pearl-gripping prude) WAP, Megan took audience participation to another level when she invited random revelers to join her in what’s best are described as a battle royale for boots.

However, the novelty wore off when she staged a second bunfight, a rare saggy moment in an otherwise sizzling showcase.

Megan got out and let us search for twerking tutorials on YouTube (Picture: Rex Features)

Megan’s off-stage dramas, including an ongoing legal feud with her record label, are well documented, but by leaving that baggage at the door, she proved she really has it all: the charisma, the rapid-fire rhymes, and, yes, a derriere-ing. -do attitude. After making her Glastonbury debut this summer, it’s certainly only a matter of time before Megs takes her rightful place as headliner.

After leaving the fiery pits of hell – the location, that is – I couldn’t have been the only one looking for twerking tutorials on YouTube. Especially for those of us who are cursed with flat pancake bums…
