Meghan Markle urgently needs help over ‘very appalling fact’ – ‘Unfortunately complex’ | Royal | News

The reason for this, commentator Daniela Elser believes, is that the Sussexes are the only branch of the Queen’s family with a person of color.

Writing for The New Zealand Herald, Ms Elser said that “the Windsors may not be in the running for family of the year”, but claimed they were not “so cold-blooded” as to wish the Duke and his family were harmed .

She added: “Likewise (hopefully) anyone involved in decision-making about their protection would be aware of the deeply appalling fact that the security needs of the Sussexes, as the only branch of the Queen’s family with a colored person, will unfortunately always be much more complex than that of, for example, Princess Anne”.

Although she is a full-time working member of the Royal Family, Princess Anne is only given protection when she performs official duties.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex lost their taxpayer-funded security after relinquishing their roles as senior royals in early 2020.

When it was revealed that the Duke would lose his patronage, an army veteran serving in Afghanistan at the same time as the royal family said Prince Harry has been a target in and out of the war zone.

Speaking to LBC, the veteran said: “Here’s a royal who fought to protect his country and now his protection is being revoked. The irony is outrageous.”

In 2020, Evening Standard reported that it costs a total of £100 million a year to protect members of the royal family who qualify for security.

Ken Wharfe, Princess Diana’s former guardian, revealed that a person is typically paid £100,000 a year for personal protection.

In addition, the newspaper reported that the Sussex’s protection was estimated at around £20 million a year before they left the firm.

With no guarantee of police protection, Prince Harry thinks it would be too dangerous to take his family from the US to visit the UK – which his lawyer previously said is “his home is and always will be”.

Harry and Meghan have only visited the UK a handful of times since they left to start a new life in the US.

The 37-year-old prince made the journey back to his homeland alone in July 2021 to reunite with his brother, Prince William, to unveil a statue of their beloved late mother, Princess Diana.

The Sussexes also returned to the UK in April, meeting the Queen on their way to the Invictus Games and attending the Thanksgiving service during the platinum anniversary last month.
