Lord Glitters, owned by the late Geoff Turnbull and his wife Sandra, won 11 of his 46 races and finished second a further ten times.

He won everywhere from Meydan in Dubai to Ascot in Berkshire, with a little bit of York, Chantilly and even Bahrain.

A huge fan favorite wherever he went, O’Meara said the years of racing have finally “taken their toll” on the brilliant veteran.

Lord Glitters’ final race came in the Brigadier Stakes at Sandown in May when he finished 13 lengths behind winner Bay Bridge.

O’Meara told the Race message: “Looks like he’s had enough, so we’ve decided to call it quits.

“He is now nine and years of training and racing have taken their toll – wear really.

“He’s had a great career, winning nearly £2.5 million in prize money and some good races, including the Queen Anne.

“Geoff always wanted to have a Royal Ascot winner so it was very special to win a Group 1 there for him and his family.”

Lord Glitters were not cheap, initially costing £230,000 to buy at the Arqana Summer sale in 2017.

But he more than justified his fee by taking home that famous Ascot win, as well as what would become his last win, the Group 2 Singspiel Stakes, in February.

His June 2019 win in the Queen Anne was worth £340,000.

But he retained his second-biggest win for the £260,000 Bahrain International Trophy last November.

Interestingly, O’Meara was in the paper yesterday that a return to the Middle East was “number one on the agenda” for the horse.

But the trainer has listened to the horse and decided that it is now time to retire him.

One fan paid tribute, saying “Happy retirement Lord Glitters! What a great horse!”
