The new education minister has been criticized after he appeared to make a rude gesture when entering Downing Street.

Andrea Jenkyns was filmed making the gesture with her hand as she walked through the black gates.

Ms Jenkyns was appointed Parliamentary Undersecretary of State to the Ministry of Education on Friday in a reshuffle by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The images, which were shared on social media on Thursday evening, appear to have been taken shortly before Johnson announced his resignation as leader of the Conservative Partyprior to her appointment as minister.

Ministers are not expected to be perfect. But is it really too much to ask that they don’t treat the public that way?

It is not clear who the gesture was aimed at.

Commenting on the video, Shadow Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson tweeted: “Ministers are not expected to be perfect. But is it really too much to ask that they don’t treat the public like that?”

Ms Jenkyns and the Ministry of Education have been approached for comment.

The Minister of Education was one of the MPs to show support for Mr Johnson outside number 10 on Thursday when he announced his resignation.

A timetable for the Conservative Party leadership contest is expected to be drawn up next week after the 1922 backbench committee board election.
