One person has been confirmed dead after a garden shed in south London turned into a 'fireball'.

The fire broke out in Church Hill Road North, Cheam, yesterday morning and was attended by the London Fire Brigade. London The ambulance service and police were all on site around 10am.

Local residents recalled hearing a loud bang before the fire broke out at around 8.55am, but was brought under control by 10.18am.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed in a statement: 'Emergency services were called shortly before 9am on Saturday 4 May to an outbuilding on fire in a residential building on Church Hill Road, North Cheam.

'Officers were present together with colleagues from LFB and LAS. Unfortunately, a body was found in the outbuilding. Officers believe they know the identity of this person and are in contact with family members.

'The cause of the fire is being investigated by officers and LFB colleagues. At this early stage the fire is not believed to be suspicious but investigations continue.”
