Partygate: Nadine Dorries told her to ‘shut up’ as she moans about political ‘witch hunt’ | UK | News

The Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport was one of Boris Johnson’s closest allies after the prime minister was attacked from all sides in a series of scandals. She has since backed Johnson ally Liz Truss for prime minister in the Tory leadership race.

Ms Dorries took to Twitter to denounce what she called “the most blatant abuse of power seen in Westminster”.

She said: “If this witch hunt continues, it will be the most blatant abuse of power we have seen in Westminster.

“It will cast serious doubt not only on the reputation of individual MPs sitting on the committee, but also on Parliament’s processes and democracy itself.”

Twitter users, however, shot back at the minister. One said she should “shut up”, while others pointed out that the Parliamentary Privileges Committee must be impartial.

One user, @eelemsti, said, “Shut up girl. You’re a show.”

Author Emma Kennedy pointed to a planned Lords appointment for Ms Dorries.

She said, “No. The most blatant abuse of power will put you in the Lords. You’re welcome.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson plans to raise two MPs to the House of Lords before his time as Prime Minister expires.

Nadine Dorries and Nigel Adams seem poised to get spots in the other place.

Other users compared Ms. Dorries to former US President Donald Trump.

User @guse_guse said “Oh dear, it’s so reminiscent of Donald Trump! Are you really suggesting that the Parliamentary Privileges Committee is corrupt and therefore should not be trusted to act in an impartial manner?

“So that Parliament itself is unreliable and corrupt?”

Writer Tom Bacon added: “Oh my gosh. How dare this committee not be just Johnson loyalists.

“How dare they reflect the majority of the public’s opinion of Johnson (given the public seems to have made up their mind). How dare they.”

However, some users agreed with Ms Dorries, someone called the parliamentary committee a “kangaroo court”.

The user, @britishalba, said: “The kangaroo court should never have investigated this matter. The government should have rejected Labour’s pathetic motion

“Once parliament returns, the government must pass another motion to end the witch hunt in recognition of the prime minister’s resignation and draw a line.”

The Privileges Committee, made up of four Tory, two Labor and one SNP MP, is tasked with investigating whether Boris Johnson intentionally misled Parliament.

The committee can recommend sanctions if it finds that the prime minister has deliberately misled the House of Representatives.
