Breads have been recalled Japan out of fear, the remains of a 'small animal' – believed to be a rat – were found baked inside.

According to company Pasco Shikishima, production at the Tokyo factory was halted and 104,000 packages were recalled.

At least two people who bought the bread in Gunma Prefuncture complained about finding a rodent.

The company said: 'We will do our utmost to strengthen our quality controls to ensure this never happens again.

'We ask for your understanding and cooperation.'

The bread had been sold in several areas, including Ibaraki, Niigata, Kanagawa, Fukushima, Aomori and Tokyo.

The company also sells sandwiches, bagels and muffins.

Japan has suffered a series of food safety problems, including a thousand schoolchildren sickened by milk and two people sickened after eating steak at a restaurant, both earlier this month.

In March, widespread food poisoning from a health supplement broke out, killing five people.
