He revealed that he actually holds the title as the oldest man in the middle.

Grandpa Alfred told The Sun, “I’ve been a referee since 1983.

“I took a course to keep a friend company and since then I’ve played 2,091 matches – and that doesn’t include the two friendlies I’ve played recently.

“I’ve kept track of every game and backlog.

“During my career I have shown the red card and 134 yellow cards 86 times. I love every minute of it.

“There have been all kinds of competitions – cup finals, a lot of them.”

He insisted: “I don’t take trash onto the field.

“Before the start of every game, I warn both teams that they will be sent off for swearing.”

Alfred, from Middlesbrough, who has been married to wife Eileen for 60 years, goes to the gym twice a week.

And he’s not about to hang up his whistle just yet.

The ex-goalie umpires in the North Riding County League.

He said: “I got to a point where I wasn’t happy to be handing out red and yellow cards to the same players week in and week out.

“My son suggested we whistle for youngsters, so now I do teams from under-8 to under-15.

“I really enjoy it. I will go on as long as the legs hold out and the mind is active.”
