Shocking video shows a wrong-way driver hitting an oncoming car

A video shows the moment an allegedly drunk woman driving the wrong way on Dunedin's Southern Freeway crashes into an oncoming vehicle.

The footage was filmed from a moving vehicle and shows the woman driving north on the southbound lane before colliding with another vehicle on Tuesday evening.

Snr. Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said it appeared the 42-year-old woman entered the highway from the Kinmont-Mosgiel on-ramp before heading north while driving in the southbound lane.

She then collided with a southbound vehicle driven by a 79-year-old woman with an 80-year-old man in the passenger seat.

Both vehicles were severely damaged and the elderly couple suffered minor injuries.

The police had the woman perform a breath test at the scene of the accident.

She registered a breath alcohol level of 890 mcg, more than three times more than the legal limit of 250 mcg.

The woman was arrested, charged with drink driving and dangerous driving and had her driver's license revoked for 28 days.
