Liz Truss outlines conservative leadership pledges

The Foreign Secretary and frontrunner to succeed Boris Johnson as Prime Minister has pledged to listen to the voices of ordinary people if she wins the keys to Downing St with the unequivocal message: “I’m on your side.” Ms Truss has won the approval of the Sunday Express, and she describes how she plans to help families through the cost of living crisis this winter and describes her ambitions for a stronger Britain.

She said: “These are difficult times and I share your concerns. I am entering this competition because I believe I have the vision and ability to help families in every part of the UK.

“I will work every day as Prime Minister to make sure that you can keep more of your hard-earned money, that your children have the best chance of fulfilling their potential wherever they come from, and that our boundaries and values are safe.

“I understand people are worried about paying bills and making ends meet, but I have a plan to fuel growth, boost wages and grow our economy again – to make the pie bigger. so we can all eat a piece.”

Ms Truss faces one of the most terrifying in-trays from a prime minister in recent decades when she makes it to number 10, but she says Brits can see the future with hope.

She said: “I will speak for people across the UK who believe in our country, who know we can be more successful, who understand that our best days are ahead of us. And I will ignore the sirens of decline and make sure we get things done to propel our country forward.”

Ms. Truss argues that cutting taxes will boost growth, boost family finances and generate the money to fund public services.

The 47-year-old mother of two acknowledged that people are “struggling with fuel bills and food bills” and stressed that this is why “it is so important that we cut taxes to put more money in people’s pockets”.

She said: “I would have a temporary moratorium on the green energy tax to [cut] fuel bills. And I will also make sure that we increase the supply of energy, such as getting more gas from the North Sea, moving faster on nuclear energy to ensure a good energy supply at a reasonable price.”

Ms Truss claims that changes to EU-era insurance rules will free up “tens of billions” of investment for the manufacturing sector.

“We have to be brave,” she said. “We need to grow the economy and unleash all the potential of Brexit…

“By the end of 2023, I will remove all EU laws from the legal books, introduce our own rules on things like investment and procurement, and I will create opportunities across our country.”

Determined that low taxes and economic growth are key to helping households with the cost of living, she said: “I would make sure I do everything I can to help families in difficulty, but the best way to do that is making sure we’re not taxing people in the first place and basically giving them their own money back.”

She is also ready to cut through the red tape, saying: “We need to make sure that our tax system, our regulatory system, is on the side of contributors, who run small businesses, who are self-employed. We need to make sure that people with a fixed income, such as retirees, can get by, that’s my priority – making sure we support a society where everyone can thrive.”

However, in a position that could put her on a collision course with unions, she argues that large public sector wage increases could hurt the country in its fight against inflation. She says it is “very important that we do not encourage continued inflation and that is why we need to curb wages in the public sector”.

The South Norfolk MP’s ambitions go beyond helping the country through the current economic challenges. She wants Britain to become the most prosperous country in Europe.

“We absolutely can be,” she said. “We have extremely talented people.

“We have a fantastic industry. We have a very successful technology sector.

“And there’s no reason why we can’t build on it to make sure that everyone in our country is thriving and that we are the most successful economy in Europe.”

Ms Truss understands citizens’ frustration with the state of public services. Her priorities include tackling NHS waiting lists and ensuring people can see GPs and dentists.

She promises that “frontline doctors and nurses will be empowered to treat patients in the best possible way” and she says she will “reduce the level of centralized dictation and bureaucracy”.

“I’m someone who gets things done and makes things happen,” she said.

She also understands that millions of voters want to see a reduction in the number of people attempting to illegally enter the country by traveling in small boats across the English Channel. Her plan includes legislation so that the European Court of Human Rights cannot block the government’s policy of sending people to Rwanda to process their asylum applications.

She stressed the need to curb illegal immigration and said: “[We] to make that happen and I am determined to make that happen.”

She says people should be proud of British history rather than ashamed, and says the rest of the world admires our heritage – and we should too.

She said: “I have traveled the world as Secretary of State and I know that people all over the world believe that Britain has made a tremendous contribution to democracy, freedom and the rule of law, and I will do so here in Britain. promote Britain. We should be proud of what we are, we should be proud of our values and what we believe in.

“And I won’t have a truck with those who are trying to take our country down and claim we should be ashamed of ourselves. The opposite is true.

“We should be proud of what we have achieved and we should also be confident in our future.”

Ms Truss, who is also a minister for women and equality, made it clear that she is following a traditional line when it comes to gender identity.

She said: “I want to make sure that our whole national life [and] public sector reflect the common sense views of the British people. I am very clear that a woman is a woman.

“That’s something that needs to be understood across the country.”

The former international trade minister also insists that Britain will continue to play a leading role in the fight against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

She said: “If [Tory members] If they choose me, they will send a message to Putin that we will resist his harassment and aggression, that we are 100 percent on the side of the Ukrainian people and that we will not rest until Russia leaves Ukraine.”

In a personal message to Sunday Express readers, she said: “I didn’t get into politics to control decline. I mean it when I say that the best days of our country are ahead of us.

“Sunday Express readers were right to vote for the Conservative Party in 2019, they were right to reject the defeatist and divisive Labor Party, and they are right to look to the future with hope. As Prime Minister, I will always be by your side.”
