Superyacht worth £20,000,000 goes up in flames a month after delivery

A superyacht has gone up in flames on a Mediterranean island just a month after it was delivered to its owner.

The 150ft Aria SF vessel caught fire at Cala Saona on the west coast of Formentera on Thursday afternoon, August 11.

The Spanish Coast Guard sent two lifeboats to the area after a distress call.

A total of nine passengers and seven crew members left the ship after a failed attempt to extinguish the fire.

There were no reports of injuries.

The black smoke that caused the fire could be seen as far as the neighboring island of Ibiza.

The superyacht, which left the yard only last month, had a swimming pool, five bedrooms and a gym. It would make its official debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival later this year.

An investigation is underway into the cause of the fire.

A spokesman for the Spanish Coast Guard said: “The seven crew members and nine passengers are all safe.

“They were evacuated on a police boat. The fire is almost out now.

“Two coast guard vessels, Salvamar Acrux and Guardamar Concepcion Arenal, were mobilized by our coordination center in Palma, Mallorca after the alarm was raised at 5pm yesterday/Thursday.”

The owner of the superyacht has been named as Paulo Scudieri.

The 61-year-old is the president of automotive interior component manufacturer Gruppo Addler, founded by his father Achille in 1956.

Scudieri, who lives in Naples, is Monaco’s tourism ambassador and the founder of a group that owns 19 restaurants in Italy.

It was not immediately clear whether he was on board, although specialized yacht websites say the vessel is not currently available for charter.
