Telecom data centers prepare for the heat of the summer months, ET Telecom

Calcutta: Prolonged heat waves will increase the heat wave cooling challenges bee telecom data centersa key part of the broadband communications infrastructure used to route calls and data and house essential customer data.

Bharti Airtel's data center arm, Nxtra dataAnd Trust Jio rely on a combination of integration of renewable energy, energy efficiency boosters and the latest cooling technologies to optimize costs and ensure unhindered operation of their data centers during the rising market ambient temperaturesexecutives with knowledge of the matter said.

Nxtra Data is well prepared to meet the challenges of prolonged heatwaves and ensure it can continue to deliver reliable, efficient and cost-effective services to customers, executives at Airtel's data center unit said.

“We have designed our data centers to withstand high temperatures and have also designed the overall HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems to operate optimally in ambient temperatures of 48 to 50 degrees Celsius,” a senior executive told E.T.

Energy efficiency measures, such as motion sensor-based LED lighting, hot/cold aisle enclosure, high-efficiency energy units and real-time energy management, including stringent energy monitoring to optimize energy consumption, were in the entire chain is set in motion. battery data centers, the director said.

Nxtra has also contracted more than 422,000 MWh of sustainable energy to reduce the use of fossil fuels.

A person close to Jio said the telecom market leader is deploying optimization technology based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for effective cooling performance of outdoor units in data centers across the country, which he said will mitigate the current challenges posed by the ongoing heatwave.

“Separately, Jio also uses solar energy apart from wind and methanol fuel cells to optimize the energy mix,” he added.

Data centers provide telecom companies with critical storage infrastructure support to deliver uninterrupted high-speed mobile broadband services. Increasing digitalization and internet penetration, along with the rollout of pan-India 5G networks by Airtel and Jio, increasing adoption of artificial intelligence, prominence of smart technologies, IoT-powered devices and big data will further drive the data center market.

Airtel-backed Nxtra operates 12 large and 120 edge data centers, offering services to leading enterprise customers, hyperscalers, startups, SMEs and governments. Jio also has a large number of its own data centers. Its parent company, Reliance Industries, last year announced an ambitious data center venture with Canada's Brookfield and America's Digital Realty, called Digital Connexion.

Asking to Trust Jio And Vodafone idea remained unanswered at the time of going to press on Tuesday.
