The United Nations General Assembly on Friday backed a Palestinian bid to become a full member of the UN, recognizing the country as qualified to join and recommending that the UN Security Council “positively reconsider the matter.”

The vote by the 193-member General Assembly was a global examination of support for the Palestinian bid to become a full member of the UN – a move that would effectively recognize a Palestinian state – after the United States vetoed it last month pronounced in the UN Security Council.
