Tories are heading for a general election, Rees-Mogg warns

Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg has warned that the 'thumping' suffered by the Tories at the local elections will be repeated at the general election unless they become more conservative.

The former business secretary said a change in Rishi Sunak's approach on key issues was needed because the party currently has “no vision”.

He called for more effective action to tackle immigration, for the “war on the motorist” to be stopped and for Net Zero to be postponed.

He told GB News: “Last week's election results were a huge defeat for the Tories and a warning of what is likely to follow in a general election.

“Although Labor under Keir Starmer is not as popular as New Labor under Blair, the electorate is wary of a Conservative Party that lacks vision.

“All we seem to offer is demonstrably competent management of the status quo, which the Labor Party is trying to emulate. Yet the status quo is not good enough. Public services are currently not at a satisfactory level.”
