A vice-president of the Conservative Party resigned live on television tonight.

During an interview on Talk TV, Bim Afolami, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, called on the Prime Minister to resign.

Boris Johnson is struggling to stay in No. 10 after handling the scandal over scandal-ridden former deputy chief whip Chris Pincher.

“You have to resign,” he said. Afolami said when asked about his thoughts on the scandal.

He added: ‘I can not serve under the Prime Minister and I say this with regret.

‘I think when you have lost trust in people, and the Prime Minister asked the trust trust to find time to restore that trust, and I accepted it as many others in the party did.

“But I think it becomes especially clear after he lost the support of two of his closest party colleagues that the time has come for him to stand back.”

The MP added: ‘I just do not think the Prime Minister no longer has only my support, nor the support of the party or indeed the country. And I think that’s why he should retire. ‘

Mr Afolami is the latest of tonight’s shock resignations, following the news that Rishi Sunak has resigned as chancellor and Sajid Javid as health secretary.

Boris Johnson’s government is on the verge of collapse after admitting he made a ‘mistake’ about Chris Pincher.

The prime minister is hanging on to a thread after he was finally forced to admit he knew of sexual misconduct claims surrounding the MP when he made him deputy chief whip.
