Under-screen Face ID is said to have been delayed to the iPhone 17 Pro in 2026

iPhone 15 always-on display

Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants has backtracked on a recent forecast for underscreen Face ID for the 2025 iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max models.

Wrote Young's original roadmap last month on X/Twitter from April claimed that an under-display Face ID iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max would replace the existing camera “notch” with just a front-facing “pinhole” camera.

If his revised prediction is correct, the 2026 iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will now be the first to replace the notch and use Face ID under the screen. Non-Pro models of the iPhone may not get an under-display Face ID feature until the iPhone 19, which arrives in late 2027.

Young also predicted technical changes to the iPhone 17 range, including a switch from low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) to low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) for all models by 2025. iPhone 14 ProThe LTPO display allows the Pro models to have an always-on display while preserving battery life.
