Westfield Stratford LIVE: Shopping center evacuated after 'security threat' | UK | News

A major British shopping center was evacuated this morning after a “security threat”. Shoppers have reported being told to leave the Westfield shopping center in Stratford, east London. People attempting to enter the Westfield were turned away by emergency services on the scene.

The reason for the lockdown, according to several witnesses, is a “security threat”, as a number of police cars have been spotted outside.

After an inspection, police confirmed the item was not suspicious and allowed shoppers back into the centre.

In a statement they said: “At 10.15am on Wednesday 8 May, police were alerted to a possible suspicious item on Stratford Place, E20.

“During the assessment of the item, the area was evacuated as a precaution. The item was not found to be suspicious and the incident was stopped at 11.25am.”
