Who was Danielle Jones and what happened to her?

Danielle Jones was only 15 years old when she disappeared in Tilbury, Essex.

On June 18, 2001, Danielle, born to parents Linda and Tony left to catch the bus on October 16, 1985 school.

Tragically, the teen's family never saw her again.

Danielle's mother Linda later panicked after her daughter's school informed her she had not turned up for lessons – something Linda described as 'out of character' for the schoolgirl.

After a few hours, the concerned mother decided to contact the doctor Police.

At the same time, Danielle's father Tony went to his sister Debbie's house – this was also the hometown of Stuart Campbell.

Campbell was Danielle's uncle after he became involved with Debbie.

Debbie was 15 when the two met and the couple lived together for 13 years before marrying in August 1998.

Danielle, then 12 years old, was one of their bridesmaids during their wedding.

On the night of her disappearance, and the following week, a search was underway for Danielle.

Family and friends scoured the Tilbury area looking for the schoolgirl.

However, one person who was not present during the search was Campbell, Danielle's uncle by marriage.

How was murderer Stuart Campbell caught?

Campbell's apparent lack of interest in Danielle's disappearance raised suspicions among both her family and the officers assigned to investigate the case.

As a result, investigating officers made the decision to conduct a background check on him.

During a background check on the schoolgirl's uncle, police discovered a previous conviction for kidnapping a 14-year-old girl a year earlier.

Campbell had received one suspended prison sentence.

He informed his wife that he had been cleared of the crime and managed to keep it hidden from the rest of his family.

That was also discovered he had also posed as a glamor photographer to lure young girls to his home, where he then took inappropriate photos of them.

At the time Danielle went missing, Campbell said he was at a hardware store half an hour away.

Five days after Danielle disappeared, police arrested Campbell.

And while a lack of evidence forced investigators to release him bailOver the next few months, police began building a strong case against him.

Found evidence included handwritten notes on his “Princess” found in Danielle's pencil case, a sex bag containing lingerie, handcuffs and – crucially – a pair of blood-stained white hold-ups containing traces of Danielle's DNA.

Phone records were also found which refuted Campbell's alibi that he had been at a DIY store when Danielle went missing.

In August 2001, he was arrested for the kidnapping and murder of Danielle.

Campbell was convicted to life in prison in 2002 after being convicted by majority verdict.

At the time, he was told he would serve at least 20 years.

What happened to Danielle Jones' body?

Killer Campbell did that never revealed where the schoolgirl's body is.

In June 2021, Danielle Jones' family appealed to her killer to reveal where he hid her body.

Relatives of the 15-year-old joined police officers to make an emotional plea to mark the 20th anniversary of Danielle's death.

Danielle's mother Linda said she hoped Campbell would “do the right thing and allow us to lay our sweet daughter to rest.”

Essex Police said: “Danielle has never left the thoughts of all of us.”

Linda, who campaigned for Helen's Lawwhich prevents murderers from getting conditional release when they hide the location of a body, he feels he shouldn't go out until he tells the family where Danielle's remains are.

She said: 'If he does anything decent in his life it should be to give us our daughter back and give her a decent burial. It is the least of the justice she deserves.

“Stuart Campbell destroyed our entire family.

“But if he would do the decent thing and return her body to us, it could save us all from many more years of torment.”
