Who is Roy Cropper in Coronation Street?

Beloved character Roy Cropper joined Kroningsstraat in July 1995.

He is the owner of Roy's Rolls cafe, where Weatherfield residents like to get a cup of tea and a side of bacon.

Actor David Neilson was cast in the role of Roy on the recommendation of Corrie writer Stephen Mallatratt.

The pair were already close friends and the actor helped “shape Roy's character”.

According to David, Roy was initially only brought in for six episodes, but the role was expanded and made a regular character.

Why is Roy Cropper in jail?

Roy is inside jail awaiting trial for the murder of Lauren Bolton, who was missing early 2024.

After an innocent cleaning, the café owner found himself as the main suspect the missing one woman flat.

That's what he was then arrested and charged for her alleged murder.

Police said they had enough evidence to convict Roy of Lauren's murder after blood and human tissue traces were found in her flat, along with a gun.

This convinced the detectives that she had been murdered, and that Roy is the killer.

Viewers were left devastated by scenes of kindness Roy is taken to jailwhere he will be held until his trial.

Unfortunately, he finds it difficult to prove his innocence, and his lawyer Dee-Dee Bailey is desperate for the truth to set him free.

Why did Roy Cropper go to the hospital?

In April 2024, Coronation Street fans looked on in shock Roy was rushed to hospital.

He collapsed in his prison cell after finding out that his good friend Carla had betrayed him.

It was revealed that she was aware of the made-up story that her cousin Bobby told the police about missing Lauren.

It's reminiscent of early Roy Cropper when people distrusted his behavior and found him scary.

Bobby changed his statement to say he saw an intruder in her apartment before she disappeared.

This ended involving Daniel Osbourneand Roy briefly hoped that the 'new evidence' would help secure bail.

However, his hopes were dashed and later, during a conversation with Carla, he discovered that Bobby had been lying and that his friend had known all along.

Will Roy Cropper leave Coronation Street?

At the moment there is no indication that Roy will leave Coronation Street.

Actor David Neilson has also revealed how he is enjoying Roy's latest storyline.

Speak with Radio timeshe said: “It's a compliment, but at the same time a responsibility.

“I like it when Roy does bits and pieces in scenes with other people and I get to spend time with my family and see my grandkids, but you never know when things will suddenly get busier and I'm prepared for that.

“What I like about it is the way it goes back 29 years to 1995, when Roy first arrived.

The actor continued: “It's reminiscent of early Roy Cropper when people were suspicious of his behavior and found him scary.

“And all this history things that happened in the past, such as the kidnapping of their foster child, will be used against him. All that makes this storyline interesting.”
