Think you can shoot 600 korfball goals in an hour? That’s what six teams in Invercargill are trying to do this week to break a Guinness World Record.

Rata Netall Club President Andrea de Vries and her club teammates organize the record attempt, which has doubled as a… fundraiser for the Southland Charity Hospital.

The goal was to shoot and score as many korfball shots as possible in a 24-hour period.

The current record holder is the United Kingdom’s Capernwray Netball Club with 14,248 shots.

Rata Netball Club players Kendall Corkney, Vanessa Sherriff, Andrea de Vries and Mackenzie Leask are organizing a 24-hour record-breaking fundraising effort for the Southland Charity Hospital, which will be held at ILT Stadium Southland on Friday and Saturday.

Each shooter will take a 30 minute time slot six times and if the shooter scores 10 goals per minute they will likely hit the 15,000 goal for the team.

“Most people find a good place and get into a rhythm,” said de Vries.

A person shoots 6 times in 24 hours and de Vries thinks that in that time he can maintain the stamina that 20-minute power naps could be the key.

The Guinness World Records this week gave official approval for the attempt and 14 independent witnesses are needed, including police, MPs, councilors and a qualified referee.

To break the record, the goals must be in the same hoop and the event will be captured on video.

An invited team of celebrity shooters will also participate, including Southern Steel netball players to Huinga Reo Selby Rickit, Abby Erwood and Shannon Saunders, Steel coach Reinga Bloxham, former Sting netball players Donna Wilkins and Debbie Munro, former Southland netball coach Moira Gerken, Sharks basketball player Connor Coll, Southland Stags rugby captain Josh Bekhuis and others.

Blair Vining’s children, Della May and Lilly, will also be involved.

The charity hospital was the brainchild of Vining, a cancer advocate who died of colon cancer in October 2019.

De Vries’ stepfather and Southlander Paul Cosgrove died of colon, liver and lung cancer for 2021.

Cosgrove had said: he believed he had been given a death sentence when he was refused a colonoscopy.

So far, more than 100 companies have sponsored $1 per cause over a period of time.

You can also donate on the Givealitte webpage and the Southern Steel after gifting a lucky donor with a season pass for their 2023 season.

The event kicks off Friday at ILT Stadium Southland and the public is urged to come along with a gold coin and support the teams.

There are also raffles and live music on Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons.

Friday at 3pm there is also a primary school challenge – featuring a 40 minute mini replica of the world record attempt.
