Britain weather: Met Office warns of thunderstorms and heavy rain drenching Britain – just days after 23 degrees of sunshine

THUNDERSTORMS and heavy rain are set to drench Britain over the coming days, but not before Britons enjoy sunshine of around 23 degrees Celsius.

Much of the country was in the sun over the Bank Holiday weekend crowds flocking to the beaches.

And this week will be mainly dry, with sunny spells and warmer temperatures.

The mercury is forecast to be in the high teens and early twenties this week across much of the South.

On Saturday the temperature in London will rise to a balmy 23 degrees Celsius.

The With office said parts of Britain may be hit by rain, but will be largely dry.

Looking to tomorrow, forecasters said: “Fog, mist and low cloud on the coast will soon clear leaving another dry day with sunny spells.

“Outbreaks of rain and stronger winds will reach the far north and northwest later.”

And from Thursday to Saturday, the Met said: “Mostly fine and dry with varying amounts of cloud and some sunshine.

“Rain outbreaks sometimes affect the north and northwest. It is getting warmer.”

But the taste of summer doesn't want to stick around for long.

The Met Office says the country will be hit by heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Saturday's long-range forecast reads: 'After this period of pleasant May weather However, everything changes the following week, with conditions likely to become more changeable across the country, with rainfall likely to be above average in most areas.

“Some of the rain is likely to be heavy and some thunderstorms are also likely.”

During the weekend the shines in different parts of the countryas I watched the masses rush out to make the most of it.

Beaches like Brighton were full of people who wanted to get close to the sea on Sunday, while the temperatures were warm.

Miss Lancashire Amy Blyth, 22, even donned her bikini Coventry while the sun shone.

And it was all blue sky in Sheerness, Knows for the Blaze class sailboat Eastern Championships event hosted by Isle of Sheppey Sailing Club.

But the weather was constantly changing – with downpours drenching Britons yesterday and the Met Office's publication 'danger to life' warnings.

It said the yellow alerts called for power outages due to lightning strikes with homes and businesses facing the threat of flooding.

The Met Office said: “There is a remote chance that fast-flowing or deep flood waters will cause a risk to life.”

Met Office's five-day and long-term forecast:

Today:
A cloudy start with fog and mist clearing during the morning with sunny spells developing for most, away from parts of Scotland and northern England. Dry for many, although some showers may occur. A warm feeling in the sun.

This evening:
The evening showers will clear quickly leaving a generally dry night with clear spells. Low cloud spreading from the North Sea and some mist and mist in the south and west.

Wednesday:
Mist, fog and low cloud on the coast will clear quickly, leaving another dry day with sunny spells. Outbreaks of rain and stronger winds will later reach the far north and northwest.

Forecasts for Thursday to Saturday:
Mostly fine and dry with varying amounts of cloud and some sunshine. Rain showers sometimes affect the north and northwest. It's getting warmer.

Saturday May 11 – Monday May 20:

The coming weekend is likely to remain fine for many, with some spells of sunshine for most and it will continue to feel warm, especially in parts of the south and east where temperatures are likely to remain in the low 20s. There are likely to be some areas of cloud, especially around some coasts and perhaps later in the north west of Scotland, with an increasing risk of isolated showers here too. After this period of pleasant May weather, everything changes the following week, with conditions likely to become more variable across the country, with rainfall likely to be above average in most areas. There is a good chance that some rain will fall and there may be some thunderstorms as well. Temperatures will return closer to normal in May.

Tuesday May 21 – Tuesday June 4:

At the end of May and the beginning of June it will probably start quite unsettled, with rain or showers for many, but also some sunny periods in between, and slightly above average temperatures. Over the period, there are some signs that conditions could calm down in the south and east, with most of the rain reserved for the north and west. With strong sunshine at this time of year, it will feel warm with any sunshine.
