Hollywood star is auctioning off a collection of watches for an eye-watering sum, including the timepiece he wore in an iconic film

A HOLLYWOOD actor has auctioned off a selection of his watches, including the exact model he wore during a famous film.

Sylvester StalloneThe collection includes a Panerai Luminor Submersible 1950 PAM00382 that was also worn by a number of co-stars.

He wore the timepiece during the filming of Expendables 2 alongside it Dolf Lundgren, Jason StathamTerry Crews and Randy Couture in 2012.

The Rocky star, 77, said it was “bittersweet” to sell 11 of his timepieces, but added that “they serve as a reminder that hard work pays off.”

The auction's headliner is a Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime 6300, which is expected to fetch between $2.5 million and $5 million (£1.99 million and £3.97 million).

Unveiled in 2014, the watch is designed as Patek Philippe's most intricate and complicated wristwatch in the company's history and includes twenty complications, including five bell modes, a reversible case, two independent dials and six patented innovations.

Stallone's Grandmaster Chime comes in a single sealed case with a presentation box engraved with Stallone's name, as well as a certificate of origin confirming he is the original purchaser.

The lot also contains product literature, a collector's book, travel case, cufflinks, USB stick and a Apple iPad with leather bag.

Elsewhere, Stallone's Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711/1300A-001 is estimated to fetch between $200,000 and $400,000 (£159,000 and £318,000).

There's also an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Tourbillon 50th Anniversary watch that could fetch between $100,000 and $200,000 (£79,500 to £159,000).

Called “Bronzo”, the Panerai Luminor Submersible is estimated to sell for between $30,000 and $60,000 (£23,860 to £47,720) and is accompanied by a signed movie poster from The replacements 2.

Stallone said: “I have been privileged to own some truly remarkable ones watches over the years, each with its own unique character and history.

“I enjoy the collecting process, as do so many others in this passionate community, who see watches not just as an accessory, but admire them for their history, craftsmanship, artistry – but most importantly – how they make them feel.

“When I look at these watches I feel really lucky to have had them; they serve as a reminder that hard work pays off.

“Although saying goodbye to this collection is bittersweet, I cherish having proudly owned them, and I hope they will be appreciated and admired in their next one houses.”

Geoff Hess, head of Sotheby's watches, Americas said: “While many recognize Stallone as the legendary actor behind characters like Rocky Balboa and John Rambo, watch enthusiasts know the legendary actor as a remarkable, influential and truly passionate collector.

“Each watch in this collection is imbued with his appreciation for fine craftsmanship and artistry; from the intricate mastery of a Patek complication to the unexpected elegance of a one-of-a-kind Panerai.

“Sly's collection offers discerning collectors the opportunity to acquire not only a rare horological work, but one carefully selected and cherished by an American icon.

“It is extremely exciting to bring the astonishing Patek Grandmaster Chime, one of the most complicated wristwatches in the world, to the Sotheby's stage.

“As Sly is a personal friend, the opportunity to collaborate with him and bring this part of his collection to market is a privilege that eclipses virtually every watch project I have worked on in my career.”

Stallone's collection will headline Sotheby's Important Watches auction, taking place in New York on June 5.
