I tried Dyson's effortless duo machine, which does more than just vacuum: it's ideal for homes with different floor types

DYSON is one of the biggest names in vacuuming, so it only seems logical that the company would next turn its attention to mopping.

That's where the Dyson V15's Detect Submarine comes in.

And best of all, it's not a separate mop: this is a 2-in-1, so you can vacuum up dirt from carpets as you would with one head, and concentrate on hard floors with a wet wash with a secondary head.

The essential household gadget serves as an upgrade from Dyson's Detect V15 Absolutely – it looks pretty much the same and carpet suction certainly feels just as good.

So how does the Dyson V15s Detect Submarine perform in our test?

And is it worth the high price tag? Read on to find out.

Dyson V15s Detect Submarine: how does it work?

The first thing you notice about the Detect Submarine is that, like all modern Dyson models cleaning devices, it is wireless and light.

It comes with a number of heads for different dirt removal situations – all of which were available on the previous V15 models, except of course the new Submarine bit.

If you think you can buy the Submarine head separately and add it to the predecessor, unfortunately not, the head is only made for the new vacuum machine.

The Submarine attachment is intended for removing liquids, dirt and stains from hard floors, so do not attempt to use it on carpet.

It has a small water tank at the bottom, which eliminates the need for water to flow up near the vacuum compartment.

It's also important to note that the tank is only 300ml, so it can't spill as much as a traditional tank. mop.

Additionally, there is no suction while the mopping function is on; the submarine actually powers the roller brush so it feels effortless as you glide over surfaces.

How does it keep clean and dirty water separated?

One of the downsides to using a mop is that once you do it, you end up dunking your head in dirty water every time, which isn't ideal.

Dyson wants to avoid this problem by separating the clean and dirty water.

So the clean water comes from eight small jets along one side of the soft roller.

The dirty water is then brushed off while it rolls into a separate zone on the other side.

Dyson V15s detect submarine: performance

We won't go into too much detail about the suction element, as it is pretty much the same as previous models.

For those who don't know, there are three modes, auto, eco and boost, which vary the suction power and battery consumption.

You activate it by pressing and holding the red main button with your index finger and you're done.

Dyson says it can get up to 60 minutes of runtime on a hard floor in eco mode.

It's a great idea to package two solutions into one like this, especially when the results are so beautiful

I managed to get over an hour of use with both the dry vacuum and wet roller doing a thorough cleaning of a two bedroom house.

Now the wet roller does an excellent job of bringing some shine to hard floors.

We tried to put some sauces on a wooden floor and a simple movement forward and back left no trace.

Overall, it leaves a nice shine and feels extremely effortless compared to an everyday mop.

I did find that it worked better on smooth, hard floors compared to textured tiles in the kitchen, which still required a few more passes to get a good clean.

Dyson V15s detect submarine: maintenance

After use, you must rinse the wet head thoroughly.

I found disassembling the Submarine roller a little tricky at first.

The dirty water is also not kept in a sealed compartment like the clean water, which was a bit messy when emptying into the sink.

Dyson V15s detect submarine: verdict

As you'd expect with Dyson, the cost – £799.99 / $949.99 – is a big ask.

It's a shame that the Submarine head wasn't made as a separate extension for previous Detect vacuums at a lower price.

That said, the Dyson V15s Detect Submarine takes the hassle out of cleaning various surfaces around the home.
