Liz Truss will become Union minister – if she wins the leadership race – as she said Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales had been ‘abandoned by nationalist and left-wing parties’.

Writing for The Mail on Sunday, the frontrunner in the Tory leadership contest said she would strengthen historic ties between the countries.

Speaking for hustings against Rishi Sunak next week in Scotland, the Minister of Foreign Affairs said she would ensure the economy would be supplied for all parts of the country.

“Building a strong economy and ensuring that the private sector drives across the country is critical to ensuring that our Union not only survives, but thrives.

“I will be supplying for Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England. In the decentralized governments, people have been abandoned by nationalist and left-wing parties.’

Yesterday she pledged to continue opening new export markets for iconic British products, such as Scotch whiskey and smoked salmon, Welsh lamb and ships in Northern Ireland.

Ms Truss, who grew up in Paisley, said she considered herself a ‘child of the Union’ – and would try to strengthen it.

She targeted the devolved governments of the SNP in Scotland, Mark Drakeford, the Welsh Labor leader, and Sinn Fein in Northern Ireland.

She accused them of “playing political games instead of focusing on their priorities.”

“Mark Drakeford’s Labor in the Senedd relies on the support of nationalists and has not invested them in key infrastructure in Wales,” she said.

In Northern Ireland, Sinn Fein remains keen to drive a wedge between Northern Ireland and Britain and push itself further and further away.

“In Scotland, the SNP is not concerned with the priorities of the people, but with independence. They want another referendum next year, while we have to concentrate on reversing a recession.’

The SNP accused her of having ‘total disregard’ for Scotland prior to her visit. She also promised to find a solution to the persistent issue of the Northern Ireland protocol, which has long haunted the Brexit talks.
