– Adur (Lab win from Con)

The Adur Council in West Sussex was founded in 1974 and has never been led by the Labor Party in its entire 50-year history – until now.

Labor won eight seats in Thursday's election, enough to make that happen to give the party its first majority in the council, while the Tories lost seven and overall control.

The Conservatives fared particularly poorly in Essex in this series of local elections – an area of England that will again be a key battleground in the general election.

In Basildon the party saw its number of councilors fall by thirteen, while Labor increased by nine and the Independents by four, while in Castle Point they were completely wiped out, losing every seat they contested.

About 13 Conservative candidates did not appear on the ballot papers in Castle Point due to nomination issues – an issue that has contributed to the new council being made up exclusively of 39 independents.

– Cheltenham

The Liberal Democrats strengthened their majority in Cheltenham in Gloucestershire by capturing a further five seats, leaving the Conservatives without a single councillor.

This could upset the city's Tory MP, Justice Secretary Alex Chalk, who had a majority of just 981 at the last general election.

– Hartlepool (Lab win due to no overall control)

Three years ago, Labor lost the Hartlepool parliamentary by-election to the Conservatives – an event that reportedly happened led to Sir Keir Starmer considering resigning as party leader.

Labor has been gaining ground in Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire for several years and on Thursday the party finally won enough seats to gain overall control, the first time it has had a majority here since 2000.
