Municipalities close most services for Queen

Most municipal services in the regions will be closed on Monday as New Zealand marks the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

At 2 p.m., there will be a state commemoration that begins with a national minute of silence in memory of the late monarch.

A one-time public holiday has been announced, which means that many companies and services have to close for a day.

In Dunedin, all of the council’s public facilities are closed, including the Civic Centre, Moana Pool, libraries and the book bus.

Toitu Otago Settlers Museum, Lan Yuan Dunedin Chinese Garden and the Dunedin Public Art Gallery will also be closed, and Olveston Historic Home will not provide guided tours.

Both the University of Otago and Otago Polytechnic are closed.

The Tuhura Otago Museum and all its business units will also close.

Larnach Castle remains open.

Trash collection at the edge of the street will continue and the Green Island landfill will be open.

A Dunedin City Council spokesman said no council-organized events were planned for Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Day, but a public memorial service would be held at St Paul’s Cathedral on October 2.

Condolence books would not be available Monday, but would remain at the reception desks at the Civic Center, Dunedin City Library and the Mosgiel Library and Service Center until the end of the month for people to sign.

All Central Otago District Council facilities would be closed, including the Ranfurly and Roxburgh i-Sites.

In the Queenstown Lakes district, all council offices, libraries and recreational facilities are closed.

Chief executive Mike Theelen said it was an opportunity for people to mourn the Queen.

“I know a lot of people are feeling a sense of loss right now. It is therefore fitting that we take the time to reflect on Her Majesty’s more than 70 years of service in Aotearoa, New Zealand and the rest of the Commonwealth,” he said.

In the Clutha area, the Catlins Information Center remains open from 9am to 4pm.

All library and municipal services and facilities would be closed, but the collection of the bins would continue as usual.

The Gore District Council said all its facilities would be closed on Monday.

All Southland District Council offices and libraries would also be closed, but collection of the bins would proceed as normal. The district transfer stations would be open.

In the Invercargill area, the State Memorial will be screened at the Civic Theater Monday at 2 p.m.

The Civic Administration Building, Bluff Service Center and Invercargill City Libraries and Archives would be closed. He Waka Tuia would be open from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. Splash Palace is open from 9am-5pm.

In the Waitaki district, the municipal offices, the Oamaru Opera House, the libraries and the aquatic center are all said to be closed.

The Waitaki Museum & Archive is said to be open from 10am to 12.30pm and the Forrester Gallery from 1.30pm to 4pm.

A Waitaki memorial service for the Queen will be held at the Oamaru Opera House starting at 9am today.
