NZ Post has launched new uniforms in the run up to Christmas.

NZ Post posters and couriers will look a little lighter and brighter when they arrive at your letterbox this Christmas.

NZ Post has replaced postmen’s yellow and red uniforms with new orange and blue uniforms with the new NZ Post branding, launched in June 2021.

NZ Post chief people officer Monica Ayers said it was in line with the new branding being rolled out on NZ Post packaging, vehicles and property, and significantly increased visibility for safety.

“Our people have been supplying New Zealanders for 180 years and we have seen a huge amount of change in that time,” she said.

“The uniforms of our mailmen and couriers are a reflection of the times. The new uniform is modern, breathable, durable and above all focused on the safety of our delivery teams – which is extremely important to us.”

NZ Post’s new delivery uniform includes a short-sleeve polo shirt, long-sleeve polo, shorts, track pants and fleece.

The bright orange color was introduced to maximize the visibility of the mail team.

Protection for the colder months is via a high visibility reversible puffer jacket, with detachable sleeves to create a puffer vest, as well as full wet weather gear.

Workwear Group senior designer – industrialist Mark Godoy said he was proud to have been involved in the design and manufacture of the uniforms.

“We started with a clear stance that safety was at the forefront of the design and that compliance with established New Zealand safety standards was non-negotiable. The new uniform is highly visible day and night, offers climate control and a comfortable fit.”

The uniform of the NZ Postal Service has not changed substantially in the past 11 years.

“The new uniforms are made with sustainability in mind. When our NZ Post postmen and couriers start wearing the new uniform, old uniforms will be returned for recycling.

“We’re working with a recycling team that repurposes and recycles materials into soft fibers that can be used for insulation, furniture and more,” Ayers said.

Over the past 100 years, NZ Postal Delivery uniforms have changed to keep up with current fabric technology, contemporary fashion trends and changes in society.

Images shared by Te Papa show NZ Post uniforms dating back to the early 1910s, when postmen wore an all-wool suit complete with epaulettes, silver buttons, leather cuffs, red trim, buttoned pockets and a tie.

Stephanie Gibson, Te Papa’s curator of history, said it was incredible to see how the styles of the NZ Post delivery uniforms had changed over the years.

“Te Papa has a special collection of historic NZ Post uniforms from the 1910s to the 1980s that tell a unique story about the changing landscape of New Zealand society. It’s exciting to see the next milestone moment for what has long been indicative of the style and trends of the time,” she said.
