O2 is giving customers a free phone accessory inspired by Hailey Bieber's viral Rhode lip case.

Despite the rather dull weather so far in May, the giveaway is coinciding Skin cancer Awareness month.

But the Rhode Lip Case from Hailey Bieber isn't cheap, costing £35 with an option to add treatment for a further £16.

Instead, O2 has come up with a less luxurious, free alternative accessory to keep your skin safe in the sun.

The accessory sticks to the back of your smartphone, where a small 10ml bottle of sunscreen fits.

O2 also includes a tube of Green People's facial sunscreen to attach to it.

The aim of the initiative – backed by The British Skin Foundation – is to get holidaymakers to pay as much attention to their sun protection as they do to their mobile phone.

An opinion poll commissioned by O2 found that 65 percent prioritize packing their phone over sunscreen.

Of those who do apply sunscreen, almost one in ten (8 percent) said they only do so when they feel like they are burning.

The limited edition free mobile phone accessory can be redeemed at selected O2 stores from May 15, while stocks last, on a first come, first served basis.

The importance of sunscreen in your skin care routine

Dermatologist and skincare enthusiast Andrea Suarez – known as Dr Dray – revealed why you should wear sunscreen.

The one thing you can do that will make the biggest difference – and this is important for all ages – is protect your skin from the sun, Andrea emphasizes.

“The vast majority of external aging is due to ultraviolet exposure,” she continued, and not because you “don't use a jazzy serum or put ninety different things on your face every day.”

“If you're not doing it in your twenties, start doing it now.”

But she said the use of Sun cream alone doesn't go far enough. Andrea urged that you also wear sun-protective clothing, such as wide-brimmed hats and long sleeves, and that you should not stay out in the sun for too long.

If you do this throughout your life — and all year round, not just in the summer or on sunny days — “you will reduce the visible signs of photoaging,” Andrea said.

These are wrinkles, messy pigmentation and sagging skin.
