Plain offal: Complaints are pouring in about the city's 'meaty' stench

Nearly 250 other complaints about terrible smells in Timaru have been received by Environment Canterbury.

By the end of February, 133 complaints had been received about offensive, strong odors in Washdyke and North Timaru.

That number has now risen to 382.

Residents have described it as having a meat smell, similar to offal.

Eleven separate odor events have been investigated since December, with one of the most recent on April 23, when 44 complaints were filed, said Gina Slee, spokesperson for the regional council.

“There is a lot of information needed to work through as part of the investigation, and we thank the community for their patience.

“We cannot comment further as the investigation continues,” she said.

“More information about each of these events will be released at the conclusion of this investigation.”

The investigation team continued to respond to and investigate odor reports, Slee said.

“We encourage people who experience offensive or objectionable odors in northern Timaru to continue to use the Smelt-it website (smelt-it.web.app) to report them.

“We will continue to work directly with consent holders to monitor compliance with air exhaust consents.”

One company was fined $1,000 on February 26 for an unrelated “acute odor discharge.”

The company was also fined $750 for breaching a reduction notice.
