A soldier has died less than a month after his girlfriend was found hanged in the army barracks where she worked.

Sophie Madden, 23, was found dead on June 10 at the Overhill Training Center at St Martin’s Plain Camp, near Folkestone.

Just weeks later, on July 19, the body of Ross Burnside, in his twenties, was discovered in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, the mirror reports.

The Veterans Against Suicide campaign group has said the deaths were “avoidable” tragedies.

The pair met while serving together in the 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery.

At the time of his death, Mr Burnside had gone to work for the 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery.

In a statement, the unit said it will “leave a legacy among those he inspired.”

A relative of Sophie also paid tribute to Ross, saying: ‘Rest in peace Ross, you will be forever missed by all. I know you and Soph will take care of each other.”

An inquest into Sophie’s death was previously held. Her death is not being treated as suspicious, according to Kent police.

The Ministry of Defense confirms that an investigation has now been launched.

An army spokesman said: ‘It is with sadness that we can confirm the death of Bombardier Ross Burnside.

“Our thoughts are with Bdr Burnside’s family and friends at this sad time.”
