Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, one of the most powerful unions in the country, accused Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) of anti-Semitism for proposing an amendment targeting “Soros-backed prosecutors.”

Rubio referred to the dozens of prosecutors elected with financial help from left-wing billionaire George Soros who have pursued a radical criminal justice reform agenda, repeatedly releasing violent offenders.
Soros recently acknowledged his own role in defending these accusers Wall Street Journal opinion piececlaiming that the fact that black people are more likely to be in prison than whites is in itself a reason to be lenient on urban crime.
Rubio’s amendment was one of several offered by Republicans in the “vote-a-rama” of amendments to the so-called Inflation Reduction Act, which spends money on climate change and raises taxes on corporations, while likely little effect on inflation.
Weingarten tweeted that Rubio’s reference to Soros-backed prosecutors was anti-Semitic because Soros is a “Hungarian Jew who survived the Holocaust.”

Soros’s experience in the Holocaust has been the subject of some controversy. Nevertheless, the claim that attacking Soros alone is anti-Semitic has been thoroughly debunked, especially given his support of anti-Israel groups.
Weingarten went even further, claiming that Rubio’s criticism of Soros was anti-Semitic because it took place on a Jewish fast day:

Tisha B’Av, or the ninth day of Av, commemorates the destruction of the two sacred temples, first by the Babylonians and then by the Romans. It is a fast observed by religious Jews but is not widely known or observed outside the community.
Biblical and historical sources note that the temples were not destroyed because of “hatred of Jews” in the contemporary sense. On the contrary, the Jewish sages cite community hatred and religious and political corruption as primary causes.
Weingarten did not say whether she was fasting herself.
Rubio enjoys strong support from the pro-Israel community and Jewish Republicans.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) recently suspended a “woke up” local district attorney Andrew Warren of Hillsborough County for unilaterally refusing to enact state laws banning transgender surgery for minors and restrictions on abortion.
