Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has agreed to take over as Bayern Munich manager after the Bundesliga champions made the shock decision to ax Julian Nagelsmann.

Tuchel, 49, has been out of work since September last year after being sacked by Chelsea following a 1-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in their opening game. Champions League fixture.

The German coach had won the league a year earlier – he made it to the final in successive years, having also got there with PSG in 2020 – but reportedly had a falling out with the west London club’s new owners.

There had been suggestions Tuchel could replace Antonio Conte at Tottenham this week, but widespread reports in Germany claim Bayern have stormed in.

According to sports picturethe Bundesliga giants were increasingly worried about Nagelsmann and feared Tuchel would be appointed by another club if they didn’t strike now.

Both Spurs and Real Madrid have been linked with approaches to the former Borussia Dortmund coach, who will lead his first game as Bayern manager next week against old side BVB.

Nagelsmann, meanwhile, is said to have been completely blind to the decision and enjoyed a skiing holiday in Austria during the international break.

Bayern are by far the top scorer in the Bundesliga with 72 goals, but are only second in the table, one point behind Borussia Dortmund after losing to Bayer Leverkusen.

The club’s hierarchy was reportedly thrown into disarray after that loss – even though Bayern had beaten PSG in the Champions League – and feel that appointing Tuchel now improves their chances of winning the treble.

Nagelsmann will be personally informed of the decision on Friday, with Tuchel taking charge of his first training session on Monday before facing former side Dortmund the following weekend.

Tuchel has been living in Munich for the past few months, although he would have considered a return to London with Tottenham, although the north Londoners may now be tempted to meet Nagelsmann who tried to appoint him before he took over at the Allianz Arena.

Joao Cancelo, who is on loan from Manchester City to Bayern, only heard the news on Thursday night after Portugal’s win over Liechtenstein and said: ‘I had no idea! I just now found out.

“I know I won’t find Nagelsmann when I get back to Munich. I would like to thank him. As for Tuchel, he made me lose a Champions League final, so I hope he wins it for me this year!’
