A security operation is underway in an area of Birmingham after a massive brawl involving 60 people last night.

A man was stabbed and weapons, including a hammer and a chain, were found at the site of the disturbance.

Police have launched an emergency shutdown and searches following the ‘major disorder’ at Sparkhill Park last night.

At least five others were injured in a large group fight about three miles from the city center.

Police said those involved had gathered near Stratford Road around 9 p.m.

A 26-year-old was taken to hospital with stab wounds but did not appear to be life-threatening.

A 23-year-old man is believed to have suffered an eye socket fracture, while four others, aged 27 to 52, came out with fewer injuries.

Detectives try to find out who was involved and what sparked the violence after finding deadly weapons in the park.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: ‘We will have visible patrols in and around the park and surrounding area this weekend.

“We also have S60 powers available from now until 11:59pm today.

“This means that we can stop and search people who we suspect are involved in violence, involving weapons, without having to have reasonable grounds to do so.

“We are not using the s60 forces lightly, but we must do everything we can to reduce the risk of further disorder. Our priority is to protect the public.’
